Key Takeaways from our Leeds F2F EO Exchange

By Dominic Cuthbert posted 04-07-2024 15:01

The Leeds F2F EO Exchange, hosted by the eoa at RSM’s Leeds headquarters, brought together dozens of members to explore, discuss, and share knowledge on EO. Here’s five key takeaways.

1. The Cardinal Partnership Case Study

The Cardinal Partnership, a leading player in the logistics sector, served as our case study business. Boasting operations in forty countries and around 1,000 employee owners, they generate an annual profit of £25-30 million, making them the largest EO business in their sector.

CEO Brian Hay highlighted their deliberate shift towards EO, viewing it as a natural progression given their existing robust governance structure. Despite exploring alternatives like private equity or a trade sale, EO aligned best with their culture, values, and maintaining business independence.

2. Effective Communication Strategies

Effective communication emerged as crucial during the event. Brian emphasised the importance of transparently communicating the move to EO both internally and externally.

In fact, Brian’s even shared the detailed documents they used to inform clients, suppliers, and colleagues.

Brian highlighted the strategic timing of the announcement to ensure staff felt valued and integral to the decision-making process.

3. Insights from the Panel Discussion

The panel discussion featured insights from Hannah Welch from Baxendale Employee Ownership, Simon Davidson from The Sewell Group, and John Lister from RPC.

They provided valuable insights into the role of Employee Trustees within EO businesses, and also stressed the need for structured training and gradual integration periods to empower trustees effectively.

Continuous learning through platforms like our Employee Trustee course was highlighted as crucial for Trustees to navigate their responsibilities competently.

4. Educational Initiatives and Transparency

Educational initiatives were also a focal point, with businesses like Sewell Group investing in financial literacy programs across all organisational levels.

Regular sessions on financial management ensure that employees understand the company's financial health, promoting transparency and collective accountability.

Panellists underscored the positive impact of open communication about financial performance, fostering trust and engagement among employees.

5. Keep the Conversation Going

As always, our events don't end after everyone's finished networking and leave. Keep an eye on our events pages to stay connected to the eoa community and keep posting threads and sharing your own insights and stories here on the eo Hub.
