Northern Ireland Announces 20th Business to Become Employee Owned

Northern Ireland has officially announced its twentieth business to transition to employee ownership.

Design ID Consulting has become the twentieth business in Northern Ireland to transition to employee ownership, marking a milestone moment for the growth of the nation’s nascent EO sector.

The announcement comes as Design ID celebrates twenty years in business.
Since 2005, it’s grown into one of Northern Ireland’s leading independent structural, civil, and infrastructure engineering consultancies.

The move sees the business transfer a controlling shareholding into an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).

Stability & Safeguarding Culture

As Design ID enters its third decade, the move to employee ownership provides a defined succession pathway while maintaining the values and ethos that have underpinned its growth to date.

The decision was driven by a clear focus on long-term stability and protecting the culture of the business.

Ian Douglas, founder and Managing Director, said: “Design ID has always been about people and how we work together. Employee ownership allows us to protect that as we plan for the future.

“It provides continuity for our clients and creates a structure where our team has a genuine stake in what comes next.”

Jonathan Macauley, Managing Director, added: “This is about recognising the contribution of our team and putting in place a structure that supports the next phase of the business.

“It strengthens accountability and gives our people a clear sense of ownership in the long-term success of Design ID.”

Driving EO Growth in Northern Ireland

Working in collaboration with the eoa, Employee Ownership Ireland is advocating for and supporting the growth of employee ownership across Northern Ireland.

Karen Maguire, Chair of Employee Ownership Ireland, said: “Reaching twenty employee owned businesses in Northern Ireland is a significant milestone.

It shows that more owners are actively considering structured succession options that protect their business, their people, and their legacy.

“What Design ID has done is a great example of a planned transition. The business continues to operate as normal, but ownership is aligned with the people who contribute to its success every day. That is increasingly relevant for many privately owned companies.”
